Tools Of Engagement

It’s pretty amazing to see what has happened since Alece launched #OneWord2011.

It started with Alece wanting to share about her desire to simplify and bring focus a year of her life around a singular idea.  It caught on and as of this writing, 232 bloggers have blogged about their “One Word”, and countless non-bloggers have caught One Word Fever and shared via Twitter and facebook.

In addition to the One Word Community, the #OneWord2011 hashtag has invaded Twitter, a #OneWord2011 Daily Edition paper.li was started (linking together all the current One Word posts), a One Word facebook like page was started (connecting One Word-ing fb’ers) and I started a #OneWord2011 Twitter list (creating an environment for One Word-ers to stay connected).

It has been remarkably encouraging to see the number of people jumping on board and not only sharing their One Word, but also engaging with many others taking part, encouraging and learning from each other.  I don’t know what exactly classifies something as a “movement”, but this may be the closest thing to one that I’ve been involved in!

If you read my last post, you know that my #OneWord2011 is “Engage”.  I tend to think I am a pretty natural connector, so much of how I have “engaged” in the past has been by nature, and not always necessarily with as much focus and intentionality to it as I’d like to believe.  With me picking “engage” as my One Word, I want to change that this year and really be more intentional about how I engage and therefore invest into my various environments, opportunities and relationships.

One such environment is the STRETCH Young Adult Community Group that I co-lead, along with Ben Turner, at Cross Point Church. For those who don’t know about Stretch, here’s the short version: The core heart and vision of the group is service and the group is regularly invested in a wide range of service projects from child care to homeless ministry and more. The group started in the Fall of ’09 with 2 people, grew to 15 people by early January ’10, exploded to 60 on January 17 2010 and has since grown to close to 200 people with as many people now on the leadership team who were in the entire group a year ago. It is nothing short of amazing to see what God is doing in that group of people.

Several Stretch bloggers have already jump onboard and last week I got the crazy idea to take #OneWord2011 offline and introduce it to Stretch in a community group setting. So when we met this past Sunday night for the first time since before Christmas, I did just that.

My goal is to actively engage that environment and create a year-long dialogue around everyone’s One Word in their small groups, fostering accountability, support and encouragement, and deepening their relationships as they all work toward seeing their One Word shape their beliefs, thoughts and actions throughout the year.

I FREAKING LOVE IT!

We had over 60 people turn in One Word cards Sunday night and this week we’ll have more. I love seeing how people are already embracing the concept and connecting with others in new ways through it. I can’t wait to see how it takes shape through the group throughout the year!

If you are involved in any kind of small or community group setting, I encourage you to consider taking the concept offline as well and let it be a catalyst for deepening your relationships and challenging those around you to experience growth in new ways.

The #TwelfDays Of Christmas

I stumbled across MediaSalt today (which I LOVE!) and discovered a fun new project they launched today called the #TwelfDays Of Christmas where they are asking people to publicly encourage one person on Twitter each day for the next 12 days.  As further described on their blog

Why? We’ve all experienced the occasional self-centeredness, rants, and one-way conversation Twitter can bring out sometimes. Let’s join together to change that during the next 12 days.

I love it! It’s creative, inspirational and fun!

They’re asking participants to tag their tweets with #twelfdays so they will show up in the project twitter stream at twelfdays.com.

I’m in and can’t wait to join together with others to publicly acknowledge, appreciate and encourage 12 folks!  Want to see who makes my list? Make sure you’re following me on Twitter!  I encourage you to blog and tweet about it as well.

I’ll also be updating this post with my #twelfdays tweets over the next 12 days.

The Social Network

Perhaps this will further solidify my geek status to some of you, but I CAN’T WAIT to see The Social Network, the upcoming film directed by David Fincher about the founding of facebook and the pop culture phenomenon it created.

The film releases October 1 and features an ensemble cast including Justin Timberlake (as founding President of facebook and creator of Napster, Sean Parker), Rashida Jones, Jesse Eisenberg (as facebook founder Mark Zukerberg), Andrew Garfield and more. Interestingly enough, the film that chronicles the inception of facebook won’t be advertised on the social network itself.  More info on the film, cast, filming, background and more can be found on The Film Stage and the film’s official Wikipedia page.

The trailer just released today and it is DOPE!

Not only do I want to see this film badly, but how about that A-FREAKING-MAZING choral version of Radiohead’s “Creep”!!! Dang! I’ve watched this trailer 5 times just to hear the song!

#geekstatus

Don’t judge me. :D

Are you looking forward to seeing this film?

Follow Friday 4/16/10

Last Friday I started a new feature to engage in Twitter’s popular “Follow Friday” in a new way.  Instead of listing a whole bunch of people on Twitter who I think you should follow, I’m creating a weekly blog post recommending a few of my favorite Twitter users who are worthy of your follow, as well as a blog you should check out.

Here is my Follow Friday (#FF) post for 4/16/10.

Twitter

@shaunking - Shaun is the Lead Pastor of The Courageous Church in Downtown Atlanta, Director of aHomeInHaiti.org and a 30 Year Old Husband, Father and Grad Student.  Shaun has an incredible story, his passion for people is contagious and he is spearheading a great work in Atlanta and in Haiti.
@foursquare - Foursquare is a social network that integrates the community building aspect of social media with location-based check-ins, giving you opportunities to earn points, unlock badges, discover new places, do new things and meet new people.  For example, based on my check-ins, I have been named the “Mayor” of one of my local Starbucks.  Some businesses even offer specials for Foursquare check-ins and Mayor specials. Foursquare is being hailed by some as “the next Twitter.” Today is actually Foursquare Day with people gathering at multiple events on 150+ cities. It’s a lot of fun.  Definitely sign up, follow them and check it out!
@kylelreed - Kyle is a 20-something who is blogging his way through life and looking to connect through community.  Kyle blogs at ThoughtsAboutNothing.com, which is one of my favorite blogs to check regularly.  I actually met Kyle through Twitter and blogs and have enjoyed getting to know him and what all he has going on.  Maybe we’ll actually meet in person one day. Imagine that! Kyle is awesome.

Blog

Jackalopekid.com is the blog home of Adam Smith a/k/a @Jackalopekid.  I came to know Adam through blogging and Twitter and his blog is one of my favorites… so much so that I took a flying leap and asked him if he would be my first guest blogger a few weeks ago, and he said yes.  Amazing.  Adam lives in Denver and his bio says, “I am husband to the amazing, @jasminerachel. I am a big-mountain climber who has a big dream of climbing the highest peaks on each continent. I love to play drums because it makes me feel inspired. I am a brand-builder of the jackalopekid. I am a mac user who will never look back. And most importantly, I follow the Creator. I do these things while blogging about it every step of the way. This is me.”

Are you on Twitter?  Do you blog? Leave a comment below with your Twitter name or link to your blog so we can connect with you!
